Peter Smith Joins R&M’s Construction Services Department

Peter Smith

Peter Smith joined R&M Consultants as an Engineering Associate in the firm’s Construction Services Department. In that role, Smith performs field inspections and materials testing for public infrastructure projects throughout Alaska. He also supports R&M’s Anchorage Materials Laboratory staff.

“Peter brings an in-depth knowledge of sampling and testing Alaska’s construction materials,” says Paul Hetzel, vice president of R&M’s Construction Services Department. “His application and experience with test procedures is an asset to any project.”

Smith is a lifelong Alaskan with eight years of experience in materials testing, traveling and working in remote locations. Prior to joining R&M, Smith was a materials lab technician for the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Central Region. He has performed testing road and airport construction materials, including concrete, cement, aggregate, and soils. Since joining the R&M team, Smith has supported several testing projects, including the Dalton Highway MP 289-305 Rehabilitation and Port of Nome Modifications Phase I.

Smith has a bachelor’s degree in the German language from UAA and a master’s degree in German languages and literature from Johannes Gutenberg Universität in Mainz, Germany. He is Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction qualified; NICET Level II certified in asphalt, concrete and soils; and ACI certified in aggregate, concrete strength, and concrete field and laboratory testing. He is knowledgeable about specifications, plans, contracts, accreditation, documentation, reporting, and other materials project requirements.
