Freelancer Rindi White Joins ABPC as Staff Writer

Nov 2, 2023 | Media & Arts, Right Moves

Alaska Business

The newest member of the Alaska Business Publishing Company team has been part of the magazine’s extended family for years. By taking on the title of Staff Writer, Rindi White formalizes her previous status as a freelance writer and editor.

The main responsibilities that come with the new position are posting articles and event notices to the akbizmag.com website, as well as writing assignments for the monthly print edition.

“I like explaining things to people. I like sharing information with people and helping them understand it,” White says. “So there’s the informational aspect, and I love that; there’s also the human connection aspect, which I love too.”

White’s byline has appeared in Alaska Business many times, hired on a story-by-story basis. She also has a regular role as editor of The Alaska Contractor, a quarterly magazine for the Associated General Contractors of Alaska. She generates story ideas, coordinates her own stable of freelance writers, and acts as a liaison between the association’s editorial board and the publishing company. White retains this responsibility while adding weekly and monthly deadlines to her schedule.

Writing is a byproduct of White’s obsession with reading. She recalls burying her nose in a book during the hour-long bus ride to school while growing up in Montana. She earned a degree in English literature at Montana State University in Bozeman and worked at the campus newspaper. A friend enticed her to take a job at a Cook Inlet fish processor to earn cash for a backpacking trip to Africa (yet to occur), and she decided Alaska was fun, so she settled in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

White worked for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman newspaper for five years and for five more was part of the Valley reporting team for the Anchorage Daily News. Her first maternity leave became permanent as she transitioned to freelancing.

“I’m so used to creating my own schedule and just being able to slide things around,” she says, to accommodate activities for herself and her three sons.

Some of those freelance jobs included writing for The Alaska Contractor, ten years before she became its editor.

“This is one of the most people-centered companies that have worked for,” White says. “I really have enjoyed being a peripheral part of the Alaska Business Publishing team, and I am very excited to be a full-fledged team member.”
