Demonstrating outward evidence of its commitment to sustainable tourism, Ketchikan-based Cape Fox Tours earned an Adventure Green Alaska certification in March for compliance with sustainable tourism practices. Adventure Green Alaska is the only sustainable tourism certification in Alaska.

Four Pillars of Sustainability

Cape Fox Corporation (CFC) leaders say its tourism arm is not stopping with the certification: it is committed to doing more and growing its ecotourism footprint. CFC leaders say the Tlingit people have been stewards of the land for thousands of years and continue to hold that role today. CFC has been committed to advancing its Tlingit culture and supporting its Tlingit shareholders from the village of Saxman for fifty years. To that end, CFC and Cape Fox Tours are dedicated to keeping Alaska true to its beauty, the culture and history of the land, the businesses that support its economy, and the natural environment, giving tourists a true Alaska journey.

“Achieving the Adventure Green Alaska certification is a remarkable milestone for Cape Fox Tours,” says Adrianna Oliva-Parks, general manager of Cape Fox Tours and leader of the ecotourism initiative at CFC. “By fulfilling the compliance requirements, we are advancing our commitment to being responsible stewards of the land, waterways, environment, community, and the guests we seek to protect. Our next steps involve forming a committee to create an action plan outlining the goals that Cape Fox Tours and other Cape Fox Commercial Services businesses aspire to achieve, along with strategies for implementation, education, and tracking progress.”

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) recognizes Adventure Green Alaska standards. This recognition ensures that Adventure Green Alaska’s criteria are equal to GSTC’s criteria. GSTC and Adventure Green Alaska’s criteria are modeled after the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. According to the United Nations, these goals “recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth—all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.” Adventure Green Alaska-certified businesses are doing their part in this collaborative effort to achieve these goals.

A commitment to “being responsible stewards of the land, waterways, environment, community,” and to the guests the company seeks to protect netted the company a certification in sustainable tourism from Adventure Green Alaska.
