The UAF’S College of Engineering and Mines has launched its new energy resource engineering baccalaureate program. Students can enroll in this forward-thinking field of study starting in fall 2024.

Developing the Degree

Over the past two years, CEM faculty developed the program using student feedback, industry analysis, and input from UAF’s Alaska Center for Energy and Power.

The program features a curriculum that blends courses in conventional and renewable energy production. It is designed to prepare students with the skills necessary to address Alaska’s diverse energy needs and to play a significant role in the global energy transition.

The program includes hands-on experience in energy drilling, geothermal and petroleum production, renewable energy systems, energy resource economics, and carbon capture. Courses are intended for students interested in pursuing careers in the energy industry, whether in traditional sectors like oil and gas or developing fields such as hydrogen, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and nuclear.

The program continues CEM’s tradition of practical, applied learning. Students will have opportunities to work with local organizations and industry partners, helping to address real-world energy challenges. The program also lays the groundwork to meet standards set by ABET, an organization that accredits engineering and technology curricula, ensuring that graduates are well prepared to lead in the energy sector.

“Students recognize the necessity of a well-balanced energy strategy, both in Alaska and globally,” said CEM Dean Bill Schnabel when announcing the program at Chena Hot Springs’ 18th Renewable Energy Fair on August 18. “The ERE program is our commitment to ensuring Alaska remains at the forefront of energy innovation.”
